The Free Blocking Zone In Youth Football

Most Youth Football Teams play in leagues that are governed by the prevailing HIGH SCHOOL rules of the state with a few nuances like weight limits and for some; minimum play rules. Some leagues will also have special rules pertaining to unique scoring for extra point plays or exception rules on special teams plays like automatic or "no rush" punts.

What I have yet to see is any youth football league that had any special rules when it comes to the "free blocking zone". Unfortunately many youth coaches are unfamiliar with what the "free blocking zone" is and the rules that pertain to it.

What doesn't vary in youth football is the application of High School rules for everything but the exception rules that the league designates for itself. There are two sets of High School Rules, Federation Rules, which covers all states with the exception of Massachusetts and Texas, which are governed by NCAA Rules.

Unfortunately many youth football coaches get High School, College and NFL rules confused with one another and often look foolish to the referees doing their games. In our league we use local High School referees who have to endure some of these uninformed youth coaches who give many of us a bad name. Our home league referees check their egos at the door, try to be patient and try to keep the eye rolling to a minimum, which may be hard for them to do in many cases. I've also coached in leagues that didn't use High School refs, where the quality varied quite a bit.

A few years back we played a game where an opposing team was called for a blatant pass interference. The ball had been thrown well over our receivers head, but the defender came up and crushed our receiver well before the ball arrived. The opposing coach went ballistic, screamed yelled and even called time-out, yelling that the ball was "uncatchable." The prevailing High School refs doing this game endured the rant and calmly explained in low tones the ruling. Well according to High School Rules, it does not matter if the ball is "catchable" or not. This coach wasted a timeout, caused his team unwanted grief, made himself out to look foolish and burned any credibility he had with the referee crew because he didn't know the rules. Not all referees are great, but most of the High School guys are ok and they try to do a good job and earn a few extra dollars for their families. I've spoken to a number of these guys, they have great stories to tell. Some of the things they hear or have to put up with are down right embarrassing.

One of the things youth coaches often misunderstand is what the "free blocking zone" is. According to Federation High School Rules it is: According to Rule 2, Section 17 Article 1: The free blocking zone extends from 4 yards to the right and left of the ball.

It is perfectly legal in that zone for your LINEMEN to block below the waist via what most people call crab blocks, scramble blocks, shoeshine blocks and cut blocks against defenders that line up on the line of scrimmage. NCAA rules also allow for these types of blocks in this zone as well. These are all legit blocking techniques that most youth players will use if they go on to play High School football and are great equalizers when playing much bigger and more athletic teams.

Get to know High School rules and the exception rules used in your league and if you are unsure, ask, don't yell. Save yourself headache and embarrassment as well as set the right example for the kids and parents.

Fabio Capello also suggested that the England door is still open to David Beckham "The door is open always for all the players but now I think about the young players. They need to play more games. More experience. We know the value of the old players. The Italian's charges face Bulgaria at Wembley followed by Switzerland in Basel in their first two games in Group G, with Wales and Montenegro making up the rest of the five-country pool.

Football Teams - What's In A Name?

In this modern age we are constantly hit with the idea of brand loyalty. How will customers, or fans, be able to make that connection with a company or team without continuity in a name? While Green Bay has always been the Packers, not every team has always played under the name they have today.

The Chicago Bears started out as the Decatur Staleys. The Decatur Staleys? Try picturing fans nowadays cheering for the mighty Decatur Staleys.

When the AFL came about in 1960 the New York team was the New York Titans. After two unproductive seasons, the new ownership changed the name to the New York Jets. Years later, Titans would resurface in the NFL when Tennessee changed its name from Oilers to Titans after moving from Houston to Nashville (with a brief stay in Memphis as the Tennessee Oilers).

In 1983, the USFL had a franchise start in Boston, Massachusetts as the Boston Breakers. In 1984 they moved to New Orleans and became the New Orleans Breakers, followed by a move in 1985 to Portland, Oregon and another name change; this time to the Portland Breakers.

The mid-70's World Footbal League 's New York Stars relocated to Charlotte North Carolina, played one game as the Charlotte Stars before changing their name to the Charlotte Hornets over a decade before the NBA's Charlotte Hornets came along.

The Kansas City Chiefs have some of the most vocal and loyal fans in the NFL, few of them were there to cheer the team when they were first known as the Dallas Texans. The NFL would again bring back a previously used AFL name when the expansion Houston franchise took the name of Texans in 2002.

The name game is also prevalent in the Canadian Football League. The most extreme CFL example would be the Montreal Alouettes. The Alouettes played in the CFL from 1946 until the team ceased to exist in 1981. In 1982 a new Montreal football team joined the CFL, the Montreal Concordes. Two years later the Concordes renamed themselves the Alouettes before going out of business themselves not long after. The saga of the Alouettes doesn't end there. The CFL had a short lived franchise in the American city of Baltimore which debuted as the Baltimore Colts, and then due to litigation changed its name to the Baltimore CFL Colts and the Baltimore CFLers, before finally settling on the Baltimore Stallions. When the NFL announced the Cleveland Browns would be relocating to Baltimore and becoming the Ravens, the ownership of the Baltimore Stallions moved the team to Montreal and became the latest incarnation of the Montreal Alouettes.

The Arizona Cardinals, back in the time they played in Chicago, were known early on as the Racine Normals.

Originally playing football as the Portsmouth Spartans, the Detroit Lions would go on to become one of the oldest NFL franchises.

Playing their first games as the Boston Patriots, the team changed its geographic name to New England without even moving. Not unheard of, the Phoenix Cardinals similarly became the Arizona Cardinals without moving.

Because of World War II and the shortage of players, the Eagles and Steelers merged for a year forming the Phil-Pitt Steagles.

The Rams have been the Cleveland Rams and Los Angeles Rams before settling in St. Louis as the St. Louis Rams in 1995.

Though Seattle has always been the Seahawks, there was a prior Seahawks in professional football. In 1946, the AAFC had a team called the Miami Seahawks. That year Miami was horrible on and off the field and ended up folding and going out of business.

The World Football League of the 1970s had a team known as the Memphis Southmen, the franchise had originally been planned to be in Toronto and have the nickname of the Toronto Northmen.

Even the National Football League itself was originally named the American Professional Football Association, or the APFA.

So, really... what's in a name?

The Top Ten Things Youth Football Coaches Do to Mess Up Their Teams

Back in the day, I used to drive a lot for business. I would often have to do a number of drives where I got up at 3:00 or 4:00 am, do a number of meetings and in order to maximize the efficiency of the trip drive to 10:00-11:00 pm that same night. Needless to say it was tough trying to stay awake so I would channel surf and listen to talk radio, the more outrageous it was, the easier it was to stay awake listening to it. There used to be a woman named Dr Laura that was on that I would catch from time to time, who had a somewhat famous book published called " Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives". While the book title seems pretty harsh, it was right on target, detailing 10 very common but absolutely preventable (non common sense) things women often did to destroy their own lives. I often thought there ought to be a book out entitled "Ten Silly Things Youth Football Coaches Do to Mess Up Their Teams"

Common Threads of Failing Teams

Unfortunately there are a number of things that are often common threads to poor performing youth football teams. After coaching for 15 years in 6 different leagues and fouding/managing several youth football teams I've seen a bunch of bad youth football teams. I even took two years off of coaching to study the best and worst youth football programs not only in my immediate area but nationwide. While there certainly is more than one way to skin a cat, there seemed to be a lot of commonality in the teams that were consistent bottom dwellers. These are teams that were consistently year after year in the basement of the standings and having a real problem with retaining players. It was painful watching some of these teams practice and play games, I really felt for the poor kids that had to play for some of these coaches, unfortunately it was obvious many of the kids were playing what would be their last youth football season . In many cases these teams had plenty of talent, more than I had imagined, but they were being coached so poorly they had no chance at having much individual success and little if any team success. While some of the coaches were obviously well meaning but lost, there were also plenty of coaches that looked like they were very confident in the abilities and their approach, in spite of their overwhelmingly poor results. While I could write volumes on why these teams did so poorly, I'm going to attempt to give you my version of the top 10.

Top Ten Things Youth Coaches Do to Mess Up Their Teams

10) Scrimmaging too much.
Some of these poor performing teams were scrimmaging for half of the practice and did not do a single fit-and-freeze or bird-dog rep.

9) Too much conditioning.
Most of these teams were spending from 25% to 40% of their practice time doing non-football related conditioning type drills. These youth football teams would have been great had they been competing in a cross country meet or push up contest, but when it came to playing football, they were getting crushed every week.

8) Poor Defensive schemes-
These teams used defensive schemes that were designed to stop college football offenses and college or pro football players, not youth football plays or offenses and youth football players. Let's not even get started about those that have minimum play rules and how their defenses rarely accommodate the playing of these players on defense in situations where they can execute and provide team value on each snap.

7) Blaming the kids.
The coaches blamed the kids lack of "effort" or lack of talent for the teams lack of success. Many of these coaches were "the grass in greener" guys. Coaches that think they had to have the best talent or big size to compete. Any lack of success was attributed to being a 'Jimmies and Joes" situation where their team got "out athleted". Rarely did any of these coaches take personal responsibility for the teams lack of success, it's always the kids, the refs, the weather, the breaks, player sick, the other team, cheating, the dog ate the homework blah blah blah

6) Lack of coaching effort.
While the typical youth football coach will put in between 110-160 hours per season in practice, travel and game time alone, many don't put a single hour into doing research about becoming a better youth football coach. Fewer than 15% of youth coaches ever purchase coaching materials. When these poor performing coaches were asked about coaching materials, most had no idea these materials existed and didn't own any. The other flavor of coaches kind of laughed it off like they knew everything they needed to know and didn't bother to own any either, in spite of their teams consistent lack of success.

5) Silly Playbook.
These coaches playbooks often looked like the best 25 plays (or more) that the coach had seen on TV on Saturdays and Sundays. There was no series basis to these offenses, most plays stood on their own and often were paired with a variety of formations. Other offenses included those that had no chance of succeeding unless their team had a monopoly on the best talent in their respective league. These offenses didn't fit the talent or the age group of these respective teams. The playbooks were often in excess of 40-50 plays of which not a single play was executed to perfection.

4) Nonexistent Blocking Schemes
Blocking schemes either non-existent or poorly coached. "Block the guy across from you" seemed to be the basic approach, but of course that is not a blocking scheme or rule. None of these teams would pull, down block, double team, trap or even cross block. Blocking obviously was not a priority and usually not assigned to the head coach.

3) Not Teaching using Progressions.
Many of these coaches had played football, but they had no idea how to transfer their knowledge to their players. In the end it doesn't matter what the coaches know, it matters what the players know. These coaches had no idea how to teach in a progression and often were trying to teach techniques that the average youth football player would have very little chance of executing consistently well even if it were taught properly.

2) Teaching age inappropriate techniques.
Many youth football coaches are clueless as to what average kids in certain age groups can and can not do. Many coaches get frustrated because the average youth player can't do what coach did in High School at age 18 with 9 years of playing experience under his belt, not to mention the body maturity and year round practice schedule that most High Schoolers do now. Others (very few) underestimate what can be done, yes age 8-10 kids can pull, trap, throw short passes on the run and play zone defense, but no they can't throw 20 yard outs or reach block 9 technique defensive ends.

1) Very poorly "designed" practices/Poor Priorities.
Too much standing around and at a pace that makes a snail look like an Indy 500 car on race day. No wonder the kids are bored and they look like they haven't practiced much, they wasted most of practice with large time spaces between drills, reps, everything. Poorly planned and poorly executed practices that seem to place a premium on wasting time. Emphasizing and spending valuable time on non critical nebulous factors instead of concentrating on perfecting the critical success factors of developing youth football teams and players. Instead of perfecting technique, holding players accountable to perfect technique, perfecting schemes and developing players, time is spent elsewhere or needlessly wasted.

Please don't be offended if you are doing one of these things. The reason I know this list so well is not only did I observe poorly performing teams doing all these things, I was gulity of doing them myself until I saw the light 8 seasons ago.

What Are the Qualities of a Football Team Striker?

Every team is like a useless pack of cards if there are no good strikers because you can't win a match without scoring goals and you can't score goals without having potent strikers. The question then is who is a striker? And what are the qualities of a good striker?

A striker is a football player whose responsibility is to score goals. This simply means that if a striker cannot score goals then he should not be in the team in the first place.

Now, let's look at the qualities of a good striker or forward. A good striker should have a clear vision just like a good goalkeeper. A good striker should be able to convert any chance to a goal. But he cannot just take his chances if he cannot see very well.

A good striker should have speed. This is where counter attack comes into play. If the strikers in a team lack speed then counter attacks become useless. If you take a look at Spanish, Argentine and Brazilian national teams you will appreciate the value of speed to any striker. Spanish, Argentine and Brazilian teams are so good at counter attacks simply because they have strikers that can move with the ball so fast.

A good striker should have what I call "goal sense". This simply means that he or she should know when to use the head or leg. He or she should know when to tap in the ball. He or she should know when to pass the ball to another player that is better positioned to score the goal. He or she should also know when to be selfish with the ball.

A good striker should have inner strength, vigor, stamina, or energy. He or she should be able to surmount any kind of opposition once he or she is with the ball. Great strikers of our time such as Samuel Eto'o Fils of Cameroon and FC Barcelona of Spain, Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast and Chelsea FC of England and Wayne Rooney of England and Manchester United of England are some graphic examples of strikers that have the much needed strength.

West Virginia Mountaineers - The Most Successful College Football Team, Yet Not Quite

The West Virginia Mountaineers football team has a pretty impressive record of 663-442-45, yet is not that quite successful, having never won a national championship. Ironically, the Mountaineers are the "winningest" team in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), ahead of Miami University and Virginia Tech.

The Mountaineers is West Virginia University's college football program. They are a member of the NCAA FBS division and are currently headed by head coach Bill Stewart as of 2008. Stewart is the Mountaineer's 32d head coach. West Virginia University used to the classified as a College Division beginning in the 1937-1938 season. By the 1939 season up t0 1972, West Virginia was classified under the University Division. In the 1973-1977 season, WVU was under Division I. From 1978 until the present, they have been under Division I-A. The mountaineers have played mainly as an independent college football team from the time of its inception in 1891 until 1990, playing only a short while in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 1925 to 1927 and then later on in the Southern Conference from 1950 to 1967. From 1892 to 1918, WVU did not belong to any conference. Since 1991, after being reclassified as a Division I Independent from 1973 to 1977 and a Division I-A Independent from 1978 to 1990, the team currently competes in the Big East Conference.

In the 1988 season, the Mountaineers were undefeated in the regular season, paving their way to the National Championships in the Fiesta Bowl against the University of Notre Dame. In 1993, they once again got into the bowl game, facing the University of Florida in the 1993 Sugar Bowl. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers lost both championships, losing to Notre Dame 34-21 and to Florida 41-7. Both the 1988 and 1993 undefeated seasons were led by head coach Don Nehlen. To date, the worst season for the Mountaineers was in 1960 when they had a winless record against ten teams.

From its inception, the Mountaineers have won thirteen conference championships, eight wins in the Southern Conference and five wins in the Big East Conference. In the 2007 season, they got a No. 1 Poll ranking following week 13, from the coaches poll. They have participates in a total of 27 bowl games and has a standing record of 12-15. They have competed in the Sugar bowl three times, in the Peach Bowl four times, in the Fiesta Bowl two times, and the Gator Bowl six times. In BCS bowl games, they are 2-0 winning under quarter Patrick White and running back Steve Slaton.

2005 and 2006 were great seasons for the Mountaineers. They achieved the first-ever eleven consecutive wins in the school's history. The 2007 season was also not half bad, ranking in No. 3 at the start of the season, which was the highest preseason raking in WVU history. They would be eventually ranked No. 1 in the Coaches poll following the 13th week and finished the season with eleven consecutive wins after winning the Fiesta Bowl.

Florida Gator Football Team

The Swamp is known as one of the loudest stadiums in college football, and all sports for the matter. The Swamp, legally known as Ben Hill Griffin stadium is home to the Florida Gators, who in recent years have become a national powerhouse in the college football world. They have become arguably the most dominant college football team over the last 15 years and are perennial national champion favorites.

Florida was a respectable team from its early beginnings in 1906; however they never gained the national respect that the school from Gainesville had craved since their entrance into the Southeastern conference in 1932. However, that all changed in 1990 when the team hired former Heisman Trophy quarterback and alumnus Steve Spurrier to lead the team to the dominance they have craved.

Little did Florida know the monster they created when they hired the visor-launching Spurrier to take over their program. Spurrier turned the program into one of the most successful and feared program in the nation. In fact, since 1990 the team is the most winningest program in all of college football, an outstanding feat considering the amount of talent and parity in college football during this time frame.

It did not take long for Florida to improve their status as a great football team winning a conference championship in 1991, a trend that would continue for the foreseeable future. Florida played in the inaugural SEC Championship game in 1992; however they would lose to eventual national champion Alabama in that game. However, the conference and nation had been put on notice that the Gators were here to stay in the country's elite teams.

From 1993 to 1996 the team played in all the SEC Championship games and they won all of them claiming four straight conference titles, which is a feat that has not been repeated to this day by any team in the SEC. These four years are considered by some experts as the most successful of any college football program in the past 25 years. The team not only won conference titles but also did so in a dominating fashion.

These dominant years culminated with the school's first National Championship in 1996, being led by the nation's number one offense anchored by Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel. The team won the National Championship by easily defeating Florida State, who had beaten them previously in the season, however they were able to avenge that loss by beating their in-state rivals 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl. The team would play well and would win two more conference championships before Spurrier resigned in 2001 to follow his dream to coach in the NFL.

Following the unexpected exit of Spurrier the team replaced him with NFL assistant coach Ron Zook, who would bring the program back to the mediocrity that they experienced before Spurrier took the helm. Zook would only last three years and was fired during the 2004 season and the school looked to be heading for a freefall that no one could help them recover from.

However, Athletic Director Jeremy Foley would hire Urban Meyer to take over the program and the team has returned and even surpassed the success they had in the 90's. Urban Meyer who has coached the team since 2005 has led the team to two national championships in just four years and the team has returned to the top of the football landscape and look poised to continue their dominance for years to come.

Meet the Nation's Most Statistically Incredible Team - The University of Washington Huskies

University of Washington football fans came up on the short end of the stick Saturday (10-13-07) when the Arizona State Sun Devils blew into Seattle and extended their winning streak to 7 with a 44-20 second half victory. The Sun Devils outscored Washington in the third quarter 21-0 and in the second half 31-3, and it is a good thing because if the game had ended at the half, Washington would have won 17-13.

Therein lies the challenge of the youthful, inexperienced Washington Huskies: they played a terrible 3rd quarter and have not yet learned how to win games.

This statistic would not mean much unless you know that:

Washington led then No. 10-ranked Ohio State 7-3 at the half and lost 33-14 in its 3rd game. It was tied with then No. 27-rated UCLA 10-10 at the half and lost 44-31 in its 4th game.

Washington led then No. 1-ranked Southern Cal 17-14 at the half and lost 27-24 in its 5th game. They led then No. 12-ranked Arizona State 17-13 at the half and lost 44-20 in its 6th game.

You better believe that Sun Devil Coach Dennis Erickson was more than sweating bullets after watching redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Locker scamper for a 32-yard touchdown run with 4:11 to go in the first half, giving Washington its 17-13 lead.

Do Husky fans realize that if each of these games ended at the half, Washington's record would be 5-0-1 rather than 2-4? Washington would have an unbeaten record after polishing off Syracuse 42-12 in an away game and upsetting then No. 22-ranked Boise State 24-10 in its first two games.

Please, do not be sophomoric (as in sometimes moronic) and remind me that a game lasts 60 minutes and only the final score counts. To do so would ignore the point I am making. You could with fairness make the point that the Huskies have been tripping over themselves coming out of the locker room to start the second half of their last 4 games.

Why this has been happening leaves Coach Ty Willingham clueless. He is quoted in the Tacoma News Tribune (10-14-07 edition) as saying, "It's obviously a difficult thing to talk about because I don't have a solution to it."

Willingham, a man of heretofore impeccable standards and integrity, is also honest. Less than 1% of all college football coaches would not publicly repeat Willingham's admission.

One thing is for sure: Whatever Willingham and his coaching staff members are saying or not saying to Husky players at halftime, it is not working worth a crap and needs to be changed.

Do not tell me that the same Husky players who might play above their head with guts and enthusiasm in the first half go brain dead and unfeeling during the second half. I would love to be a bee on the wall in Washington's locker room at halftime and see what-if any-stinging comments are made. As a certified Monday morning quarterback and coach, this would be the first words out of my mouth at halftime during the Arizona State game:

"Let me be the first to congratulate you on a phenomenal first half. Arizona State made some mistakes in the first half and we did too, but you are leading the unbeaten and No. 12-ranked team in the country at halftime, 17-13.

"Some people would say that the Sun Devils have more talent on their team than we do, but we lead at the half, 17-13.

"Others would say that the Sun Devils have an unbeaten record and our record is 2-3, but we lead at the half, 17-13.

"Still others would say that the Sun Devils are ranked No. 12 in the country and since we are not ranked in the Top 25, they will win this game, but we lead at the half, 17-13.

"Now, we are going to quickly hand everyone a slip of paper and a pen, and by secret ballot I want you to quickly write down which player you think is the leader of this team."

After the ballots are immediately collected and Jake Locker's name is on every ballot or almost every ballot, I would say this:

"Jake, you may be a redshirt freshman but your teammates believe you are the leader of the Washington Husky football team.

"I want you, Jake, to get up right now and tell the coaching staff and your fellow teammates why we can win the second half of this game, how we are going to do it, and what it will take to do it."

I would then, as the head coach, sit down, shut up and listen. After Jake is done with whatever he says, I would ask any other player who received a vote as THE team leader to get up and do the same thing.

Let the players convince themselves and believe they can do in the second half what they did in the first half: outscore the opponent. Do that and Washington upsets its opponent.

Now, why is Washington the nation's most statistically incredible team?

1) The Huskies are rated No. 41 in the Sagarin Ratings.

2) Their current record is 2-4.

3) They are rated No. 1 for having played-for the 4th consecutive week-the toughest schedule among all 242 Division I-A and 1-AA teams.

4) There is not another team among Sagarin's first 40 rated teams with less than 4 wins.

5) The next highest rated Sagarin team with only 2 wins is No. 60 North Carolina at 2-5.

6) The Huskies, as Sagarin's 41st best rated team in the nation, are ahead of No. 42 Alabama (5-2), No. 44 Wisconsin (5-2 and ranked No. 5 in the AP Poll just two weeks ago), No. 46 Louisville (4-3), No. 48 Texas A&M (5-2), No. 51 Air Force (5-2), and No. 52 Indiana (5-2). Not too shabby, as the former Opera Man (Adam Sandler) would say on Saturday Night Live.

7) The highest rated team with the same 2-4 record as Washington is Stanford at No. 68. Stanford has played the 4th toughest schedule in the country.

8) North Carolina, which has a 2-5 record, is rated No. 60. The Tar Heels have played the 3rd toughest schedule through college football's week 7.

I know, now you wonder who has played the 2nd toughest schedule. It is 1-6 Notre Dame. I expect the Huskies to lose against Oregon (hopefully not by 53-7 like cross-state rival Washington State) and California. I predicted this two weeks ago on October 3.

I also predicted on October 3 that Washington would beat (in order) Arizona, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington State and Hawaii, finishing the year at 7-6. Hang on, Husky fans, the best is yet to come.

Football Facts - 5 Interesting Facts About Football

The First Football League

It is generally accepted that the first officially organised league competition in the world was the (English) Football League formed in 1888. Then, it consisted of 12 clubs all of whom were based in the North and the Midlands of England. The very first winners of the Football League Championship were Preston North End.

In 1992 with the influx of megabucks from BSkyB (now called Sky TV), the top teams broke away to form their own league called the FA Premier League.

Today, the original Football League has 3 divisions called; the Championship, Division 1 and Division 2.

So that England today has a total of 4 professional football leagues, with teams moving up (promotion) or down (relegation) through the leagues depending on their points tally at the end of each season.

The First Football Association Cup (FA Cup)

The first FA Cup final was played in England in 1872 between Royal Engineers and Wanderers in front of 2,000 spectators. Wanderers ran out 1-0 winners partly because Royal Engineers -- who were the favourites -- lost a player through injury, early in the match, and had to play on with only 10 men since substitutes were not allowed then. The "Challenge Cup", as it was known originally, was the brainchild of Mr. C. W. Alcock of Sunderland who proposed only the year before that "A challenge cup should be established in connection with the Association"; the "Association" being the Football Association, hence the FA Cup.

The Oldest Football Club in the World

There have always been many arguments over the oldest football club in the world. Here are some facts to consider though...

The oldest, continuously documented, "football" club in the world is Dublin University Football Club, in the Republic of Ireland, which was founded in 1854. However, the club now plays Rugby Union, not Association Football. For this reason it is not officially recognized as the oldest football club in the world.

Sheffield Football Club -- Sheffield FC -- founded in England in 1857, is recognised by both the English FA and FIFA as being the oldest, continuously documented football club in the world still playing Association Football. They play in the Northern Premier League Division 1 South in England. So they are generally now recognised as being the oldest football club in the world.

But, there is documentation of a "football club" in Edinburgh, Scotland between 1824 and 1841. Several documents still exist today which refer to the "Foot Ball Club" and it's rules. It worked rather like a golf club where members selected teams from their membership to play one another. The club has been now been reconstituted and plays under the name of "The Foot Ball Club of Edinburgh" in an amateur capacity.

The First International Football Match

The first international football match was played between Scotland and England in Glasgow, Scotland on 30th November 1872, in front of 4,000 spectators. The result was a hard-fought 0-0 draw. And of the 110 games played between 1872 and 1999 when the fixture was disbanded, Scotland had won 41, England 45, and 24 games had ended in a draw.

The First Trainer's Dugout

The first ever recorded use of a sunken covered enclosure at the side of the pitch (the dugout) was in the early 1920s at Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen, Scotland. The trainer at the time, Donald Coleman, had it built to protect himself while he took detailed notes of his players during matches, as was his practice, and, was partly sunken into the ground so as not to block spectators' views of the game. Visiting teams were so impressed that the idea soon spread throughout the UK and then the rest of the world.

Coaching Youth Football - The Snack Schedule

This is a tough one especially if you are coaching a younger youth football team. My personal opinion is there is no need for a snack before the game or at the half. I am not even a fan of it after the game since the kids are more concerned about getting their food and not listening to the coaches.

We live in a democracy so plan on the kids getting something. The younger the team is the more likely there will snacks. This is where the Team Mom needs to assign a schedule for the families. I try to keep it to just a beverage, like Gatorade and only for AFTER the game. One year I allowed for oranges at half time since the parents thought it would energize the kids. What a nightmare! The kids used more energy pushing each other over to get to the bag of orange slice. No one listened and the player left orange peels all over the place. Half time was spent cleaning the mess made on the field. I have seen some teams have a "party" at half time with all kinds of cookies and other stuff. No way will I allow snacks at half time. If the individual parent gives you a hard time tell them to bring something for their kid and the parent can feed it to them while you speak to the team at half time.

I need to remind myself I am out here for the kids and if snacks are important, then I will try to accommodate that as long as it does not interfere with the coaching.

Cheer For England With Team Football Shirts

The England team has always been a favourite among football lovers, and although it may not be more popular as the teams of Argentina and Brazil, it is most certainly as popular as them. And to the home crowd, the England Team has a different place altogether. Over the years, it has produced some of the best football stars of the current football era like David Beckham and Owen and Wayne Rooney, and there aren't many who would not love to have their team shirts as souvenirs. However, since that it often not possible, replica shirts of the soccer stars are the next option. It is a great way to show your support for your team and if you are fortunate enough to meet your idol, you can have them autographed and display it with pride.

England Football Shirts: England Football Shirts replicas are widely available in almost all the leading sports store in England. You can easily buy them off the rack or have them custom made. Shirts with the name of the football stars imprinted at the back are also available but they cost a bit more than the ones with no names. You can even choose goal keepers' shirt if you want to stand out from the crowd.

England Football Kit: Instead of just buying a shirt to support your team and if you are a sports person yourself, you can buy the entire football kit. All the items have the logo of the England soccer team and you will definitely look like a national team player yourself when you step out in them. The items like sneakers, gloves, socks etc will all come in useful when you play and the jersey will grab eyeballs when you support your team in them.

Hiring Shirts: If you do not want to buy the shirts because you want to have the one with the latest designing, then you can even hire the football shirts. The jersey of the England football team has undergone quite a few modifications over the years, with each design aiming to make the players look better than before. However, some die hard soccer fans prefer to collect all the shirts, so that they can boast of a collection, which are even handed down from generation to generation.

Football is a maddening game and the frenzy that it creates is undeniable. The team can only perform well when they have its supporters to boost their morale, and the sight of hundreds of supporters in the gallery cheering for them is a treat for the eyes.

Starting Your Flag Football Playbook

A playbook is something essential for a flag football team because it comprises of descriptions and diagrams of the plays that the players have practiced. It is their winning guide, their recipe for winning. It contains the plays that they are most familiar with, the drills that they have perfected; the strategies that could make them exceptional. As the coach, you know the uniqueness of each of your players. You have seen their strengths} and weaknesses. You know who the standouts are. Develop the playbook with this in mind. Decide where to setup players and then how to have the game rolling. As you develop your own team's playbook, think about the following tips:

Keep it easy.
A playbook should be clear and easily understood by everyone. If the players get baffled instead of empowered, the playbook defeats its meaning. You may begin with a drawing of 3 pass routes for your receivers: one short route, a mid route and a long route.

Keep the passing and running balanced.
Even though flag football is more of a passing game, running the ball is equally important to keep the opponents perplexed. To do this, you may draw about 2 plays to each side of the field, keeping one draw play in your playbook for aggressive pass rushers. The greatest teams have these to win tough games.

Maintain a progression of targets & keep lines open.
For pass plays, there should be at least 3 targets: the primary, the secondary and the bail out - the person a player goes to when no one is openand when he desires to get away from the sack. Develop complimentary receiver routes along with your pass plays so that if the right outside receiver runs a deep inside route, a secondary right side receiver can run a mid outside route. Place a bold reminder for your receivers to come back to the quarterback if in trouble.

Create a working audible system.
It is possible to find your team in trouble even though you thought you called the right play. Therefore, always preparea play or two to jumpto. It's not enough to match an audible with a code name. There must be a system. Avoid being easy to figure out. Try making a series of calls in which a specific word position designates the play. Be creative. Allow every player to be familiar with the system.

Don't forget your defense.
Match your plays with a strong defense. The goal is to beat the passing and running speeds of your opponents. A cover 2 is a basic defense to run that most of the time works. In this defense, the cornerbacks and linebackers cover receivers man to man, while the safeties divide the deep field in 2. If a receiver enters their 2 of the field, the safety rescues.

These are the basics to developing your own playbook. Don't reject other resources, such as the Internet, where a great number of playbooks are also attainable. These can permit you variety in your plays and a handful of ideas.

Still, the most important thing is that every member of your team accepts the plays. It is in this way that the playbook will work for you and that every player can pull off the play well.

Coach Miles has been advising flag football teams for over 15 years. He has developed several flag football plays over the years that have made it into top-selling flag football playbooks.

Pittsburgh Steelers - Top Three Teams Leading in Super Bowl Wins

Every football team in America wishes to compete in the Super Bowl at the end of the football season. It is not only considered as the main event but this is the championship round. It is where the best team of the year is named, as well as where the Most Valuable Player is recognized. Not many teams have a chance to grab a title in this most awaited event. Some teams though get a chance to be repeat champions while others just plainly wait for their break to make it again to this very important match.

The most numbers of wins for Super Bowl is only five. In addition, there were only three teams, who got a chance to be called repeat champions five times. Below are some of them:

1. Dallas Cowboys- this team was the Champs for Super Bowl VI, XII, XVII, XVIII and XXX. These were the seasons led by Tom Landry as their head coach as well as the defense coordinator of the team. He popularized a defense that has been one of the basics for every football team today. He led 2 Super Bowl titles for this team and was known to be the 3rd in rank for the coaches with most wins. However, their owner fired him after the team lost their home game. Johnson who led the team two consecutive Super Bowl Matches then replaced him.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers- This team won the title for Super Bowl IX, X, XIII, XIV and XL. This team was not doing that good until Chuck Knoll. He made a dynasty for this team by winning four championship games within 6 years. He popularized a defense for the team called Steel Curtain. When he retired, Bill Cowher replaced him in 1992 and he led the team to their 5th Super Bowl Title in 2006. He used the Blitzburgh defense as a key to wining this title.

3. San Fransisco 49ers- Yes, the team of the famous quarterback Joe Montana. This team owned the Super Bowl Titles XXIX, XXIV, XXIII, XIX and XVI. This was the only team in NFL who won all titles in Super Bowl only. This team never made a sound not until 1982 where they grabbed their first title in NFL. Bill Walsh was the one who turned the tables for this team as he led them to win. This team is not only popular for their three-time MVP awardee, Joe Montana, but also known for the best players of all time like Jerry Rice, Steve Young and Ronnie Lott. They also have a lot of hall of famers.

Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers and San Fransisco 49ers are the team hailed for the most number of Super bowls won. It is no doubt that these teams were worthy to be called Champions, not only for their coaches and for players, but how they gave the crowd many memorable and great moments in the history of football. Even though they are not the latest champions, they are still teams to watch out for in this league.
