History of Houston Football

Houston has a rich and proud history of professional sports. With football being such an important part of life in Texas, the city of Houston boasts a rich tradition of professional football going back 50 years. With the loss of the Oilers in 1996 it was only a matter of time before pro football would be restored to the city and its loyal fans.

The first professional football team in Houston was the Houston Oilers. The team was started in 1959 by owner Bud Adams who was also a co-founder of the AFL. The Houston Oilers took part in the first ever AFL championship match and beat the then Los Angeles Chargers to claim the title. The oilers and their fans continued to enjoy many years of football in Houston before their owner decided to unceremoniously move the team to Tennessee in 1996 with the lure of a new state of the art stadium which they moved into in 1998. Despite huge public outcry against the move the owner decided to move the team anyway and pay millions to the city of Houston for damages for the loss of the team to the city. With football being such a huge part of Texas it would not be long before professional football would be returned to the city of Houston and their great and loyal fans. However, it was not easy to get a new team and many obstacles had to be overcome before the NFL would grant Houston with a new franchise.

In 1997 the now current majority owner Bob Mcnair began a push to bring professional football back to Houston by establishing a new organization called Houston NFL Holdings. In 1998 the NFL announced that it had narrowed its search for a new location for its 32nd franchise to three possible locations. These were Toronto, Los Angeles and Houston. Los Angeles quickly became the front runner to get the new franchise mainly because of its huge media market. Houston officials announced that they would build a new domed stadium as part of their plan to compete for the new franchise. At the same time entertainment guru Michael Ovitz announced plans to a new state of the art stadium in Los Angeles. Both Mcnair and Ovitz would put pressure on the NFL to make a decision on the new franchise by early 1999 so as to keep public support from waning. Meanwhile Ovitz would receive competition in his own market from real estate developer Ed Roski whose proposal involved renovating the Los Angeles coliseum.

In early 1999 the NFL owners voted in favor of Los Angeles with their decision being contingent on the city putting together an acceptable ownership team and stadium deal. If they were not able to accomplish this, the NFL announced it would then turn its attention to awarding Houston with the new franchise.

Subsequently the city of Los Angeles decided it would not permit tax dollars to be used to help build a new stadium and neither Roski nor Orwitz were willing to work together or build a new stadium on private financing alone. Since Houston was prepared to build a brand new state of the art stadium, they then became the front runner to get the new NFL franchise. Despite late efforts by Los Angeles to secure a deal the NFL finally decided to award Houston with the new team in October of 1999 and accepted Mcnairs 700 million dollar offer as well as award Houston with the 2004 Super Bowl.

Thanks to persistence and hard work professional football had been restored to Houston where it belongs. The new franchise would decide upon the name Houston Texans after receiving permission to use the name from Lamar Hunt who had previously founded the name Dallas Texans and which later would become the Kansas City Chiefs. With former Denver Bronco assistant Gary Kubiak now in place as the head coach and quarterback Matt Schaub signed, the Houston Texans hope to establish a winning tradition for years to come. Along with their loyal fans they are looking toward the new season as a breakthrough year.

The Cowboys won three Super Bowls in four years in which the Cowboys became the first football team in history to do so. The New England Patriots later have matched it once since the time the Cowboys reached that feat. The Cowboys with their five Super Bowl wins are tied with the most with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francsco 49ers. The History of the Houston Texans

Does anyone remember when the Houston Texans used to be called something else? Probably not, as most will tell you that the Houston Texans are nothing like the former football team that used to be the darling sports team of Houston. Yes, I will mention them here just for ol' time sake. They were the Houston Oilers and not only were they a good team, they had a pretty good dance line too - called the Derrick Dolls (isn't that name fitting?)

Anyway, getting back to here and now, the fact that Houston has another great football team is absolutely wonderful in my opinion.

Houston is the fourth-largest city in the US and has had a professional football team since 1959 (just one year before Dallas got their Cowboys). In 1997 the owner of the Houston Oilers got the go-ahead to move his team to Tennessee and all of a sudden, the rabid football fans in one of the largest cities in Texas found themselves with no home pro football team to root for. As a matter of fact, Bud Adams had to pay a lot of money for the privilege of moving out of state. But that did not deter him in the least and Houstonians had to face the fact that they might be in for a long dry spell without a pro football game at home to attend.

As fate would have it however, Houston fans were is for a big surprise. Bob McNair was in the mood to bring a pro hockey team to town n 1997 and that didn't work out. So being the brilliant man that he is credited for, he set his sights on bringing another pro football team to town. By using strong local community support from the citizens of Houston, coupled with the partial promise of a new domed stadium to house the team's games, Houston was in the running for a new football team to replace the sorely missed Houston Oilers.

However, In 1998 Cleveland received their expansion franchise and then the next franchise would be awarded to Los Angeles (or so it seemed). LA couldn't get their act together so the NFL owners turned to Houston and decided to give that city a serious look. So the league's expansion committee told McNair and the other Houston official to attend the October 6, 1999 NFL Owner's meeting in Atlanta. And on the morning of that same day, the NFL owners voted 29-0 to award the 32nd franchise and also the 2004 Super Bowl to Houston. WOW, is all anyone can really say to that. Houston really wanted a team back at home.

After that, things started to move fast for the future team. They didn't have a name yet but that did not really matter to the fanatical fans of Houston. All they cared about was that they had been starved for a home team now for a number of years and were ready to have one once again. By 2000, things were really on a roll with the new Reliant stadium groundbreaking occurring. The state-of-the-art facility would have 69,500 seats and would become the NFL's first stadium with a retractable roof. Quite a feat in anyone's stretch of the imagination.

Also in 2000, the worst kept secret in Houston history became reality and the team was named the Houston Texans. The next year saw Dom Capers announced as the club's first head coach and his first task was to fill out the rest of his staff. Play began in the 2002 season. The Texans first game saw them up against the Dallas Cowboys at their own Reliant Stadium. History was made as the Houston Texans were just the second expansion team to ever win their first game. They beat their intrastate rivals 19-10 and even though they lost their next five games, the Texans had won the hearts and minds of their home town.

Kansas State Wildcats College Football Team History and News

The Kansas Wildcats play for the Kansas State University. It represents the university in the North Division of the big 12 Conference and is classified under Division I of the NCAA. The team is also widely known as Kansas State, KSU or K-State. The Wildcats started playing football in 1893 during a Thanksgiving Day game against St. Mary's Academy which they won 18-10. The home stadium of the wildcats is the Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas which has a capacity of 52,200. Bill Snyder was one of the coaches of the KSU. During his time, the Wildcats had 11 seasons won including an eleven consecutive bowl game appearances. Its current coach is Ron Prince. However, he announced in November 2008 that he will no longer coach the Wildcats next season. The teams major rival is the Kansas Jaywalks. KSU's official mascot is Willie the Wildcat. Their all time record is 452-596-41 (.431).

Championships and Important Moments:

Kansas State won its first conference football championship in 1934. The New York Times called KSU "an established Middle Western leader" also in 1934. The Kansas State Wildcats competed in 13 bowl games. They had an 11 bowl appearance streak that lasted from 1993 to 2003. Wildcats players and coach won various awards such as the Lou Groza Award in 1997, the Jim Thrope Award in 2002, the Boddy Dodd Coach of the Year Awards in 1998, the Davey O'Brien Award in 1998, three Heisman Trophies in 1970, 1998 and 2003. Twenty two former Wildcats are now NFL players.

Kansas State Wildcats Recent News:

The team is currently on the look-out for a new coach. Ron Prince's three-year reign ends on November 22. Many fans are blaming him for Wildcats' losing streak. The coaching job is believed to go to Bill Snyder if he wants it. Kansas is said to desire a coach with Bowl experience and wants to hire as soon as possible. However, money might be an issue. There is still the matter of paying off Prince $1.3 to buy him out of the raise and extension given to him just last summer.

On the positive side, the November 15 loss against Nebraska Cornhuskers showed the abilities of the specials teams and the defense to score touchdowns off returns. They hope to sustain it by next season. On the players, Josh Freeman suffered a mild concussion during the Nebraska game. No further information however, was divulged by coach Prince. Questions on the future of some players, particularly Brandon Banks are being asked. Would he stay with the team now that Prince, who signed him, is leaving. Banks said that his stay will depend on the new coach that will be hired by the Kansas State.

Next game for Kansas Wildcats is on November 22, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. Against Iowa State. The venue of the game is the Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas. Kansas Jayhawks College Football Team History and News

The Kansas Jayhawks started their football tradition in 1890 in Lawrence, Kansas. They represent the University of Kansas in the North Division of the Big 12 and is classified in the NCAA's Division I. It was later renamed "Border Showdown". Winner of the Border Showdown was given the Indian War Drum, which is the award whenever the two has a game. The other rival, the Kansas State Wildcats, fight with the Jayhawks for the Governor's Cup. The game between these two teams is called the Sunflower Showdown.

The Jayhawks played 11 bowl games with a 24-21 win in the 2007 Orange Bowl. They had eight conference championships in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1908, 1930, 1946, 1947 and 1968. In 2007, they won the divisional championship, which they lost however in a tie-breaker. In addition, they have the sixth best winning percentage in NCAA football history at .710. The Buckeyes have six national titles and six Heisman trophy winners in the program's storied history, including the only 2-time Heisman trophy winner in college football history, Archie Griffin. Ohio State has been a member of the Big 10 conference since its inception in 1917 and has 29 Big 10 championships. Wayne Woodrow Hayes took over the head coaching position in 1951. Coach Hayes is revered by many Ohio State fans as an icon. He's also regarded as a legend in the sport of college football. This is probably because Woody Hayes, more so than any other individual, is responsible for transforming Ohio State from "the graveyard of coaches" into a college football powerhouse. He started with a mediocre football program and turned it into one the the winningest football programs of all time.

Woody Hayes took over the struggling football program's head coaching position in 1951 and his influence was immediate. Coach Hayes was a disciplinarian, the complete opposite of the easy-going Wes Fesler, the man who he took over for. His 1952 squad finished 6-3 and was victorious over arch rival Michigan for the first time in 8 years. There were a few controversies and many celebrations during Hayes' tenure at Ohio State. The Buckeyes were placed on probation for a year in 1956 due to allegations that Hayes was giving small loans to help out financially struggling players. Then there were the well-known fits of rage that coach Hayes was famous for, but no one is perfect. Luckily, Coach Hayes' pros outweighed his cons. He turned Ohio State into a college football powerhouse and won three national championships during his time at Ohio State. Coach Hayes, along with Bo Schembechler, is credited with intensifying the greatest rivalry in college football in a period called "the ten year war."

The Buckeyes played in what I believe is not only the best game in Ohio State history in the the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, it's also one of the best college football games of all time.

The Miami Hurricanes were riding an impressive 34 game win streak coming into the game and many people said it was one of the best teams ever assembled in the history of college football. Despite the fact that the Buckeyes were heavy underdogs, and nobody anywhere outside the state of Ohio gave them a chance, Ohio State showed that the whole of a team was greater than the sum of its parts. Displaying the heart of a champion, the Buckeyes pulled off an improbable upset over the mighty Miami Hurricanes 31-24 in double overtime.

In fact, the stadium was built for the purpose of the 1998 FIFA world cup - it's both ironic and fitting that France would win the world cup at their own stadium the year that it opened. Irish Soccer Team - A History 1924-1988

The Irish team made its competitive debut at the 1924 Olympics and in the process they reached the quarter finals.

Between 1924 and 1936 the team competed as the Irish Free State and from then until 1950 the team was known as Ireland. After some confusion as the north of Ireland and the south were both called Ireland and the fact that players were playing for both sides FIFA intervened and after 1950 the team became known as the Republic of Ireland and this remains the case today.

After a troubled period in the 1960's, the Irish team regained respectability in the football world under the direction of Johhny Giles, only narrowly missing out on qualification for the 1978 World Cup.

Eoin Hand took the reigns for the 1982 World cup qualifications and again narrowly missed out this time on goal difference to France. Disappointing campaigns followed in 1984 and 1986 for the European Championships and World Cup respectively which ended his stint in charge.

The Republics greatest era came under the management of Jack Charlton 1986-1995, during his reign Ireland qualified for the 1988 European Championships in Germany, 1990 World Cup Finals in Italy and the USA 1994 World Cup. Not only did the Irish qualify but they left there mark on each championship they qualified for.

In the 1988 European Championships in Germany the Irish failed to advance from the Group stages but with only 8 teams in the competition Ireland finished a very respectable 5th. It also provided the Irish fans with the first but not the last great moment in Irish football. A 1-0 win against England with a Ray Houghton goal provided the Irish with their first memorable moment in a competitive championship.

The Kansas Jayhawks started their football tradition in 1890 in Lawrence, Kansas. They represent the University of Kansas in the North Division of the Big 12 and is classified in the NCAA's Division I. The home stadium is the University of Kansas Memorial Stadium that has a capacity of 50,071. It is the first stadium built on an college campus west of the Mississippi River.
