Helmes the Hammer

Having scored 21 goals in his first season for the Neverkusen, Patrick Helmes' injury looked set to derail this season. But the prolific German international was back amongst the goals on Sunday and will be a key player for the Neverkusen as they push for the Bundesliga title. Injuries can define a player for all the unfortunate reasons. It's how you respond to the setback. As you can see, Patrick is as powerful as ever. Can he help fire the Neverkusen to the Bundesliga title?

Bill Cosby - Himself (Part 5)

Live show in 1983. Read more! Comedian Bill Cosby brings down the house to an audience in Ontario, Canada in a two-hour show where he pontificates on several subjects, such as drugs, drunkeness, and the follies of dentists, before launching into his primary subject matter, the hilariously pernicious antics of his family, from childbirth to college football to enduring a noisy four-year-old on a transcontinental flight to his son's bizarre hairdos to his wife's marginally restrained reaction to a childrens' squabble over the right to shower to his own father's nicknames to himself and his brother Russell. Table Sports

Back in the olden days before the Internet and Music videos, families, friends, children, teens and adults would often get together for an evening or weekend afternoon of companionship, laughter playing the odd board game or play cards. Many occasionally played a game or two of table football, table hockey, air hockey, pool or whatever other table sport happened to be in the home. These games added fun and excitement to those boring Saturday afternoons, served as a great way of bonding between families and offered a way to level the sports playing field for those who lacked the bulk and size to play the real sports.

However, as times changed families began spending less time together and friends sought more expensive thrills outside one another's homes. Table sports seemed to become a past time that would fade into history. Now, with less money to spend on outside entertainment and with more people choosing to entertain at home, table sports such as table football and table hockey have been making a big come back and an entire new generation is rediscovering these games and just how much fun staying at home can be. Here are just a few of the table sports available that just might fit in with your family and friends interest and idea of fun.

Pool and Snooker

"Rack em up!" This phrase was and still is the call of competition in many corner pubs and bars, basements and wreck rooms around the country and around the world as competitors, friends, neighbors and even complete strangers challenged one another to the ever popular game of Pool and it's somewhat lesser known counter part Snooker. These two games, not only were fun to play but, require skill, concentration and a steady hand as opponents use a cue stick and a cue ball to hit other balls into the four corner and two side pockets of a felt covered table. This game was and is so vastly popular that local bars formed pool leagues that competed with one another and big money could be had for those skilled enough to turn professional. For most of people however, pool provided a game where families and friends could get together have a great time and not only learn the skill of the game but, geometric angles and impossible angles as well!

Table Tennis

Table tennis is often considered the table sport that started the home table sport craze of those years now past and still remains a popular game around the world today. This fast paced game also known as ping pong features a table, a net, two or four players and a ball. It is a fast paced game that creates a lot of light hearted moments as opponents send a small lightweight ball zooming over the low net in a fast paced game of control and concentration. This game comes both with it's own table or a table conversion set that allows you to set up that table tennis game on your dining room table, pool table or even in your backyard.

Table Football/Table Hockey

Table football and table hockey can really get the competitive juices flowing as you become team owner/ manager and have control of your own football or hockey team and try to score points by getting your ball into the opponents goal. The players are secured on rods which you then turn and in the case of hockey slide back and forth to control play and score your goals. Table football, also called Foosball in some areas is a fast paced game that allows adults and children of all ages to join in a game of football instead of just watching it on the television. While table hockey and it's counterpart air hockey allow for the fast paced play of an ice hockey game without the bruises and injuries.

Many table sport games come not only in the full sized games with stand alone tables but, also in smaller less expensive versions that you can sit right on your own kitchen or dining room table and enjoy hours of fun. Often times you can find a combination game set that includes not only table sports but other popular games as well such as darts, checkers, shuffle board and even ring toss. If there is one good thing about this economic recession is that people are rediscovering just how much fun staying at home can be with the variety of table sports available that fit almost any budget.

Big Ten Teams Make Bowl Plans, But Where Will Michigan Be Bowling?

Well it appears that all seven bowl-eligible Big Ten football teams will indeed be bowling this winter as we identified in the Big Ten Bowls post yesterday. But the big question is where will Michigan be spending there days in early January. Last Saturday I posed the question How can the loser of this game NOT be #2? on the Big Ten Fans football forum.

With USC currently #3 in the BCS behind Michigan at #2, but only percentage points behind, the talking heads of college football are saying that if #3 USC defeats #6 Notre Dame on Saturday night they will jump Michigan into the #2 spot. But let's take a look at Michigan and USC:

- Michigan's only loss on the season was to #1 Ohio State by a score of 42-39. USC's only loss was to a solid Oregon State team that is 7-4 on the season. While Oregon State (OSU) is a strong team this OSU is not in the same class as the clear-cut #1 OSU from Columbus.

- As #3 USC prepares for #6 Notre Dame, remember that Michigan played the Irish earlier this year and thumped them 47-21 in South Bend. While this game will be a road game for Notre Dame, anything less than a 26-point blowout win by USC will, at least in my mind, not be enough for USC to deserve to surpass Michigan.

So I think it is clear where I stand on this topic. Heck, if Notre Dame can pull off the mild upset this may not even be an issue. But when you compare these two teams side by side I think that the Big Ten does indeed have the two best teams in the nation in 2006.

Michael Shull, a native of Ohio, has been a fan of Big Ten football for over 25 years. Shull grew up following both Ohio State and Michigan very closely as well as the 6 Ohio MAC schools. Italy's Match Rigging Scandal - How Cheating Didn't Pay for Juventus

One of the best known football teams in Italy is Juventus, who are based in Turin, but despite of their impressive performance on the pitch the 2006-2007 season has seen them relegated to the Serie B for the first time in their history.

In fact Juventus finished the previous season at the top of the Serie A league, their relegation - and a starting deficit of 9 points - was all due to a scandal that rocked Italian football and saw sanctions applied to a total of 4 first division clubs, although Juventus was hardest hit and the only one to be eventually relegated.

Juventus and the other three teams - AC Milan, Fiorentina, and Lazio - were all found guilty of influencing game in their favour by having favourable referees appointed to important matches.

The sentence imposed on the four clubs was draconian to say the least - Juventus, which was hardest hit was stripped of its previous 2 league titles, banned from participating in Champions League, relegated to Serie C1 and docked 30 points, while the other teams were relegated to Serie B with fewer points deducted.

On appeal all the teams had their sentences reduced, so that only Juventus was relegated, but to Serie B, and the 30 point penalty was initially reduced to 17 and later only 9 - the equivalent of winning 3 matches with no points awarded.

The relegation saw several players leave Juventus; Emerson and Fabio Cannavaro both moved to Real Madrid, for where the Juventus manager, Fabio Capello, had already departed, while FC Barcelona signed Gianluca Zambrotta and Lilian Thuram.

Some players did remain loyal however, and the team's performance in Serie B has been impressive. Although they drew in the first match, Juventus won each of the following eight games with only one goal conceded and they remained undefeated until January.

At the time of writing in mid April, Juventus has only lost 2 matches, drawn 8 and won 22. With 10 more matches to play they are not unbeatable due to their 9-point deficit, but if they continue to perform at this level they are sure to re-enter the top division in the 2007-2008 season.

Let us hope that Juventus recaptures its previous glory, but perhaps more importantly, steers clear of behaviour that is in clear breach of good sporting conduct.

Turin is one of the most beautiful cities in Turin, although often overlooked as a tourist destination, but don't forget to ensure to plan your trip there to coincide with Juventus playing at home. You can find out more about Turin at http://www.bella-torino.com
